Jaguar Football Restocks Via The Transfer Portal For 2022

On December 15th, South Alabama signed a group of 11 traditional recruits consisting of 10 recruits from the high school ranks and one from junior college (the list can be seen HERE). However, as anyone who follows college football knows, traditional recruits are only a piece of the puzzle for those that fall outside of the handful of blue blood programs that currently rule the sport. The Jaguars, who added a number of impact players from the portal last year, have again met many of their most pressing needs for the coming season by bringing in experienced players from other programs.

Around that same mid-December date the younger players were signing, the Jaguars received commitments from a handful of potential impact transfers. Quarterback

Carter Bradley , a a former Elite 11 competitor who passed for 2,377 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 21 games for Toledo, tight end DeMarcus Thomas, a Mobile-area native who caught one pass for six yards in two injury-plagued seasons at Ole Miss, edge D.K. Bonhomme, a Canadian that put up 17 tackles, two for a loss and a sack in 24 games at Indiana, and defensive lineman C.J. Person of Montgomery, who played in 21 games with Bonhomme at Indiana and registered 16 tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss in 21 games, were the members of that initial wave.

Kane Wommack and his staff made the most of the final weekend before classes begin on January 10th by hosting another group of players and the results were again positive as they reload for next season.

I am Fully Committed to South Alabama ??@CoachGSteele @KaneWommack

Dontae Lucas (@depope55) January 8, 2022

The biggest (in every way) new addition may the 6-3, 335lb offensive guard

Dontae Lucas , formerly of Florida State. As a freshman in 2019, Lucas lived up to his billing as a four-star recruit and the ninth rated guard in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite when he started seven games and was named a second-team Freshman All-American by The Athletic. He followed that up with another seven starts in 2020 but in 2021 he only appeared in two games before leaving the Seminole team and entering the transfer portal. Despite offers from SMU, Arkansas State and his old FSU head coach Willie Taggert, now at Florida Atlantic, Lucas decided that South Alabama was the place for him after his visit.

"The players," he said when asked why he chose the Jaguars. "And I really got along with (offensive line) coach (Gordon) Steele and Coach Wommack....Looking forward to this new start."

The powerful Lucas will counted on to help establish a stronger ground attack for South Alabama after they only averaged 111.4 yards per game and 3 yards per carry in 2021. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Joining Thomas in the move from Ole Miss is

Jamar Richardson . The #7 cornerback in the junior college ranks after the 2018 season according to the 247Sports Composite, Richardson (5-11, 180) redshirted his first season in Oxford and then had 10 tackles and two passes defensed in 2020 as he played in nine games and started two. In 2021 he was moved to receiver to help shore up a thin rotation, but did not record a catch. Last month Richardson publicly committed to UT-San Antonio, signed a non-binding grant-in-aid with the Roadrunners and was even added to their online roster, but his visit to South Alabama and the opportunity to play much closer to his hometown of Aliceville, AL won out. With his one remaining year of eligibility he will move back to his natural spot on defense and help replace the departing

Devin Rockette , a super senior that had a strong final year at corner for South Alabama.

In addition to two former Rebels, there will be three former Hoosiers becoming part of the Jaguar program next season. Following his old defensive coordinator from Indiana, like Bonhomme and Person, linebacker

James Miller will also be starting classes in Mobile this week. In four years in Bloomington Miller was a key reserve and sometimes starter that racked up 74 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, two passes defensed and two forced fumbles in 33 career games. Like his other two former and future teammates, Miller saw his playing time and production decline precipitously when Wommack left Indiana to become head coach of the Jaguars. After redshirting as a freshman and with the additional year granted due to the COVID season of 2020, Miller will have two years of eligibility remaining.

All told, with transfers and traditional signees included, South Alabama's recruiting class is currently ranked fourth in the Sun Belt Conference, with at least one more addition expected by the end of the first week of classes. With another round of signings coming in February and more transfers becoming available after spring practices conclude around the country, the 2022 Jaguar roster has not yet reached it's final configuration.
